Antonio Lewis For Atlanta City Council District 12
For years, the City Council and Mayors office have not invested in city jobs at a rate in which the city has grown. The public sector is operating at 30% less the staff than need. We must rebuild the city workforce by making it stronger and giving departments resources to service us as an international city.
Atlanta was a beacon for youth services, but programs have not met the need for some time. We must also reinvest in youth employment to give young people work experience and career paths. We must partner with private resources to reach at-risk youth.
We can better serve the needs of the people by analyzing developments and city contracts through an equity lens. Let's find ways to make our city more affordable for renters and homeowners.
We must have responsible policing not aggressive policing. We need to reduce crime and violence in ways that get real results and rebuild trust with community members with alternative public safety measures.
Every neighborhood deserves a fair share of city services. We must hire the workforce to make Atlanta the envy of other cities. Our city is operating at less than the required workforce and we must rectify that to beautify our city.
Partner with Fort-Valley State University to bring an extension office and analyze our community food shortages. Use the results to come up with solutions. This program will bring agriculture jobs, enrich the STEM program at the local high schools and help us gain access to healthy foods using urban farming tactics.
Atlanta has the worst wealth gap in the country and the people left out of the dream of Atlanta, are the people born in Atlanta. A guaranteed income is a cash payment given directly to citizens. It is unconditional, with no strings attached and no work requirements. This will be a tool for racial and gender equity.
I've created a beautification campaign which includes public art, clean ups, park restoration and urban green space.
Climate Change is one of our biggest threats. I am committed to bringing forth policies to decrease Atlanta's carbon footprint.
Work to bring back Atlanta Summer Pit-Jobs and Mayor Shirley Franklin's "Next Step Program". Part of the reasons our kids are selling water on the the corner is because they need money. We should reinvest in these programs to give our students experience, keep them out of trouble and put some money in their pockets.
One of the most common sentiments you hear every election is that most people don’t get to vote for someone they like, but rather are forced to pick between the lesser of two evils. Ranked choice voting would allow a voter to choose the viable candidate and the candidate that they think will do the best job.
We should invest in Lake Charlotte Park so that residents can enjoy the natural preserve. I will work with local community leaders and the park services to refill the lake and build around the park.
